MATERIAL CONTOURS

Skopje, N. Macedonia
The exhibition examined the emergence of the geographic—a new but for the most part latent paradigm in design today—to articulate it and bring it to bear effectively on the agency of design. After more than two decades of seeing architecture and urbanism as the spatial manifestation of the effects of globalization, it is time to consider the expanded agency of the designer.

The exhibition demonstrates architecture’s ability to not just shape the built environment – but analyse it, via, geogrpahy, critical cartogpraphy, economics, and political theory, to discover the invisible order behind ‘the way things are done’, in order to escape a way of working that has nearly rendered both the academy and practice of architecture obsolete. Through a methodology of ‘unpacking’ – exposing the multiple layers, ‘hard’ and ‘soft’, physical and critical, in order to identify new hierarchies or hidden actors – the work demands an intense examination of the local, an abject surrender to the existing and the rejection of any singular “vision”.
